The City of St. John’s is moving ahead on a proposed business in Airport Heights that has the neighbourhood divided.
Council has voted to approve, in principle, the rezoning of land at 75 Airport Heights Drive for a lounge and eating establishment. Councilors Deanne Stapleton and Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary voted against.
Many in the overall neighbourhood have expressed approval of the project, citing a need for a gathering space in the neighbourhood.
However, residents located directly next to the property have raised several concerns over noise, traffic congestion and parking, rodents, increased vandalism and litter, and a decrease in property value.
The rezoning application must now go to the province. It will then come back to city council for a public hearing and further consideration.
