Newfoundland comedian and political satirist Rick Mercer says the federal election will provide some fodder for his Just for Laughs comedy tour which launches tomorrow in the capital city.
Mercer, who has skewered and lampooned politicians across the country over the course of his career, watched last night’s election results with great interest.
He told VOCM Morning Show co-host Fred Hutton the election was disastrous for Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party.
He says Trudeau gave up “probably the greatest amount of political capital than I think anyone ever has.” Mercer says Trudeau had a majority government, a weak opposition, a strong economy, low unemployment, and still went from a majority to a minority. He calls that a big fall from grace.
Mercer says it appears the bar is much lower when it comes to who is running for politics.

He says when he was a teen, Brian Mulroney had “giants” in his cabinet. That’s not the case anymore, asking whether Justin Trudeau has anyone in his cabinet of the caliber of John Crosbie. He says those people don’t exist anymore in politics, and people who have other options are deciding politics is not the life for them.
Mercer’s stand up routine which begins tomorrow in St. John’s will draw from the events of the day. He’s got a book launch tonight at Costco in Galway.
