They didn’t do it in the name of any particular cause—they just wanted to see every inch of the island step by step.
Bonnie Simmons and Lorna Hogan set out from St. John’s in 2016 and are now in Port aux Basques, their final stop in their walk across the T’Railway.
Both live and work in the St. John’s area so they did the trek a few of the 883 kilometres at a time. Simmons says coordinating two vehicles took a lot of planning, but having to carry their gear by hand through the remote Gaff-Topsails proved to be one of the most challenging aspects.
Simmons says they took up the island walk just for the sheer love of the land. There was lots of wildlife to see but they did not encounter any bears.
They once thought they did but it turned out to be berry-pickers in the bushes. They were close to two moose but the creatures ended up sauntering off.
