The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board is formally recognizing the Avalon Mall for its efforts to manage organic food waste.
The MMSB provided $15,000 to the mall to help purchase a composting unit to deal with leftover food collected at the food court.
It’s the first such system to be launched at a shopping centre in the province.
The MMSB says the system has the potential to divert 1000 kilograms of food and fibre waste from the landfill.
The MMSB says organic waste makes up more than 30 per cent of the daily waste generated in the province.
