The Better Business Bureau is using Halloween to warn the public about some “scary” scams targeting consumers.
The BBB says over $6-million has been lost to the “creepy” CRA Scam where someone poses as the Canada Revenue Agency attempting to gain access to personal information by demanding payment for overdue taxes.
The “Hair-Raising” Romance Scam has taken over $22-million from consumers through the creation of a fake online persona, coercing trusting individuals into an online romance or friendship that ends once they’re cheated out of their hard-earned money.
Scammers have also taken $3.5-million through online purchase scams for which people get trapped on fake websites, with fake free-trials or by purchasing counterfeit goods from legitimate-looking retailers online.
As well, $4.5-million has been taken from people through employment scams. Further details can be found here.
