Another Newfoundland community is dealing with the loss of its only bank.
The Mayor of Roddickton-Bide Arm on the Northern Peninsula says the closure on October 8 has already had a big impact on the community and its residents.
Scotiabank pulled all services including the ATM, leaving the nearest bank 140 km away in St. Anthony.
Sheila FitzGerald told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly, it’s not only affecting her town, but surrounding communities as well, and they’ve already noticed the impact on business. She says when people make the trek to St. Anthony they’re doing their groceries there, and running other errands, meaning local businesses are suffering.
Road conditions in the area can be treacherous as well, and she says the real problems will be encountered once the winter arrives.
FitzGerald says online services fill some of the need, but it doesn’t work for everyone. In talking to residents, seniors tell her they don’t trust online banking.
