Selina Oldford had only ever sat inside of a fire truck before, but she was named honourary “fire chief for a day” at the St. John’s Regional Fire Department Central Station.
Oldford, a grade five student at St. Francis Assisi School, was selected as the winner of a poster contest with the theme “Not Every Hero Wears A Cape.” The prize – a day off school touring stations and enjoying time with fire crews.
Oldford says she is amazed by all of the things a firefighter has to do in one day. Yesterday she toured the gym, kitchen and sleeping areas at the station.
She says her favourite part was riding in the truck and it is all thanks to her poster.
Oldford says her picture depicted a family practicing their escape plan in case of a fire.
She says it is important to have two or more escape plans.
