The growing season in the local agriculture industry is drawing to a close, and according to the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture it has been a mixed bag for farmers.
Federation President Merv Wiseman says for some sectors this past season was the best it has been in years, but for others it was near disastrous.
He says vegetable farmers saw great success, with potatoes doing particularly well.
He says last year was a bad season for potatos. But this year some farmers are saying they’ve seen a 100 per cent improvement.
It wasn’t a great season for everyone in the province, however.
Wiseman says farmers that depend on forage were hit particularly hard.
He says draught conditions wreaked havoc on the industry, particularly on the west coast. He says it could have been a “disasterous” situation.
Wiseman says he can’t comment too much on the specifics of the situation just yet until has has more detailed conversations with those affected.
