The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources had launched an investigation into the illegal dumping of rabbit carcasses in the Goulds, but before it got underway the carcasses were removed.
The Department says it was notified of the dump site near the Robert E. Howlett Memorial Highway on Friday of last week.
Even before officers were able to begin their investigation, they learned that the pile of carcasses had been removed along with some other potential evidence.
They’re asking the public to report any discoveries of deceased wildlife, but to refrain from removing items that may impede ongoing or future wildlife enforcement investigations.
Officials say over the past two weeks enforcement officers have been involved in multiple investigations on the Avalon related to illegal hunting. Charges are pending.
The improper disposal of wildlife is a violation of the Wildlife Act with penalties of up to $200 and three months in prison.
