Newfoundlanders are shining on the international hockey stage as players from Conception Bay North and the metro region make their mark.
It was a big night for Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts in last night’s match against Russia. Mercer, playing with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, scored one of the team’s three goals in a 4-3 loss to Russia at Harbour Station in Saint John. The Q had a 3-1 lead in the second but Russia chipped away at it and scored the winner with just over three minutes to play.
Mercer, who also had an assist, was the Q’s player of the game.
The two teams go at it again tonight in Moncton.
Zach Dean of Mount Pearl scored one of the goals for Canada Black in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge as they beat the Czech Republic 5-4.
