A 23-year-old man is dead following an incident on Bond Street yesterday evening.
RNC are working with the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in determining the exact cause of death.
A large pool of blood and what appeared to be a firearm were clearly seen on Bond Street last night as police secured the chaotic scene and conducted their investigation.
Police do not believe the incident was random in nature.
More details will be released later this morning at a press conference at RNC headquarters in St. John’s.
No Gunshot Heard from Neighbouring Houses
A resident of Bond Street says neighbours were anticipating something serious would happen at the scene of the death of a man in a violent incident around 6:30 last night.
Josh Taylor told VOCM Morning Show Co-host Fred Hutton, he lives across from the scene but did not hear a gunshot. He says he’s an active hunter and sportsman and knows a gunshot when he hears it.
Despite the fact that something that looked like a firearm was found lying in the road at the scene, he says he did not hear a gunshot.
Taylor says the residence at the focus of the incident is a for-profit emergency shelter and disturbances are not unusual at the site. He says he was making supper at the time, and the incident started the usual way, with some noise that was not uncommon in the area.
He says the scene was chaotic, with a lot of people displaced by what was happening, but he gives full credit to paramedics and first responders who were on the scene within moments.
Taylor says area residents have long been concerned about the property and the conditions in which people there are living. He says neighbours have spoken with council, the police and others about their concerns, but to no avail.
He says the for-profit shelters have no supports or social work with high-risk people put together in what he calls low-quality conditions.
