A man who escaped from a corrections facility on the west coast is back in custody, after over six hours on the lam.
Forty-year-old Timothy Hackett reportedly fled from the West Coast Correctional Centre in Stephenville yesterday at 6 p.m.
An extensive search was launched with the assistance of police dog services. Officers tracked Hackett from the correctional centre and across a body of water. However, they lost the trail in the town of Stephenville.
The investigation eventually led RCMP to a house on Poplar Drive. An RCMP negotiator made contact with a woman inside the residence who surrendered herself. She was arrested for obstruction.
Officers, as well as police services dog Axel, entered the home shortly after midnight and arrested Hackett—who was then taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Second Encounter with Police Dog
Hackett was originally charged for a violent crime spree in Clarenville in September. He’s accused of assaulting an older woman, stealing her vehicle, and fleeing from police.
In that incident, the search led officers to the Burin Peninsula, where they found the vehicle abandoned near Monkstown. Police service dog Grinch tracked Hackett down, finding him hiding in the nearby woods.
Hackett remains in custody, and is facing charges for escaping lawful custody.
