Government says MOWI has apologized to the province for the die-off of 2.6 million salmon in Fortune Bay.
Employment in the Fortune Bay – Cape La Hune district was one of the topics at a meeting between Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne and MOWI surrounding the mass mortality.
Minister Byrne says although employment insurance is not in the hands of the provincial government, there are other ways that they can take care of the workers from Northern Harvest.
He doesn’t know how many jobs have been affected.
He says right now there are standard programs to help workers like the fish plant worker assistance program.
Minister says the government plans to look after jobs lost due to the die-off.
