PC Leader Ches Crosbie is pleased the House can get back to business, but says the whole thing could’ve been avoided.
Crosbie says Byrne had the option to withdraw the “offensive” remarks right away when it was pointed out to him, which he chose not to do. He says Premier Ball had the option of putting pressure on Byrne to do so, and he didn’t.
Crosbie says to not forget, when Byrne was defending himself, he was using the defence of justification, and doubling-down on everything he said about racism. He says something had to happen to correct that, and at least they achieved that. He hopes Byrne will “behave himself” for the rest of the session.
Meanwhile, Premier Ball says it wasn’t government who introduced the resolution, it was the PCs.
Ball says people complained about wasting time, but it was the PCs who brought forward the motion sparking the debate. He says there are lessons to be learned.
Ball says at every opportunity he gets, he will continue to keep the House working in collaboration, and that’s what he said before making the amendment.
