It has been called an example of hope and resilience, and now, a landmark business on Bell Island is celebrating three decades in operation.
The Bell Island Community Development Co-operative Society is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its first business venture—the Rolling Pin Bakery.
The Bell Island Co-op was launched in December 1984, but the bakery would not come to fruition until five years later.
Former president Pat Rose says the bakery created the first four permanent jobs on Bell Island since the DOSCO mining operations shut down in 1966.
Rose says it was a formidable task to establish the business, as well as keep it in operation, but they pulled together to make it happen.
Jennifer Stone, the current co-op president, says there have been plenty of challenges over the years, but the community-owned venture has weathered the storm and has seen a recent rejuvenation.
