An activist protecting Ragged Beach in Witless Bay is calling on the provincial government to put a moratorium on development in the area.
Police responded to complaints from Witless Bay on Friday after an excavator was found doing work in the area of Ragged Beach and Mullowney’s Lane.
Lorna Yard says she wrote yet another letter to Premier Dwight Ball on Friday morning, before anything happened, urging him once again to break his silence.
Yard says the story has gone from trying to protect Ragged Beach, to government’s silence. She says her question is, despite repeated calls from residents, environmentalists and people all across the province, why government won’t step in and investigate the issue.
Yard says they continue to present government with evidence of issues of corruption and conflict of interest with the Town of Witless Bay, with no response.
She says the residents are being harassed by the constant effort to put what she calls the “illegal” road in. Yard says they want the work stopped immediately, then let everyone catch their breath and do a proper investigation.
She says if government comes back with an answer not in their favour, at least they’ll know the process was followed and it was investigated.
