Residents of the Northern Peninsula are hoping that mysterious timbers recently pulled from Quirpon Harbour can be identified.
Baxter Hedderson of Noddy Bay is a fisherman who owns his own longliner.

He recently pulled some items from the bottom of Quirpon Harbour that have raised more questions than they answer.
He initially thought they had hooked bottom, but it turned out to be what he calls a load of oak planks peppered with brass rivets.
The crew took the material back to shore and stored it nearby.

Bill Bartlett of Quirpon—now 88 years old—grew up hearing stories about nearby shipwrecks from his grandfather and remembers one tale involving a three-masted French schooner that sank back in the 1800s.
Bartlett says the wreckage could be even older. He says it’s his understanding that the crew drowned and the captain is buried on Quirpon Island.
Hedderson says the items he pulled up fit Bartlett’s description. He says it would be nice to identify the timbers and wreck because it’s a part of history.
