Many graduation or prom dresses are only worn for an evening, then relegated to the closet. But why not let someone else enjoy it?
That was the inspiration for a group of people in Gander, operating the “Gowns for Grads.”
Candy Antle, who brought the idea to Central Newfoundland, says she heard of it in other parts of the country, and decided to reach out to the local Elk’s Club.
She says they have set up a “store-like” experience for people to come in and try on dresses. Donations have been pouring in, and they now have hundreds of options for participants.
They gave away 25 dresses at their first session, and expect more at their next event on November 30.
Antle says it is about helping people. She says young people have a lot of barriers in their life as it is, and they wanted to help break down some of those barriers.
The Elks of Canada Club in Gander is currently accepting donations, and will open their doors for the next dress event on November 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
They hope to eventually expand to tuxedos and accessories.
