A new survey shows that youth sports are a source of stress for many parents, and none more-so than here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
According to a recent survey conducted by FlipGive, the rising cost of youth sports is the primary cause of stress for parents of young athletes.
VP of Marketing with FlipGive, Elizabeth Gladney says the cost of keeping kids in sports year-round is increasing year-over-year. Parents are spending anywhere from $1,200 to $6,000 a year, while if their kid’s sports include travel, parents can pay between $15,000 and $20,000.
According to FlipGive’s Canada Sports Stress Index, Newfoundland and Labrador ranks worst when it comes to the amount of stress parents feel about their child’s sports involvement.
Other sources of stress include the time needed to get kids to and from games, fundraising, travel, and the pressure to win. Despite the stressors, FlipGive, which offers incentives to fund young athletes, says sports are still an important part of keeping kids active, engaged and having fun.
