Farmers in the province are getting older, but new generations have an opportunity to get involved.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Young Farmers’ Forum is hosting its fifth annual Leadership Summit and it’s currently underway at the Fairfield Hotel.
NL Young Farmers Forum coordinator Matthew Carlson says the average age of farmers in the province is increasing. He says farms are getting bigger, but less farmers are actually doing the work.
Right now there are more than 80 members in NL Young Farmers and Carlson says the biggest category is new entrance. The organization represents farmers ages 18 – 40 years old.
Carlson says the organization has new ways get fresh faces involved in the agricultural industry.
He says right now they offer a mentorship program and have created a “new farmer guide” to help those who are starting out.
