CNIB has partnered with the City of St. John’s, City of Mount Pearl and Town of Paradise to launch a program to enhance crosswalks and intersections for people who live with sight loss or mobility challenges.
The CNIB is launching their collaboration with municipalities and a new technology called Key2Access.
The smart phone application or key fob will allow people with sight loss or mobility issues to approach a crosswalk or intersection with confidence.

The application allows them to be alerted when they are approaching a crosswalk and gives them an opportunity to press the signals from their device. It chimes when they are safe to cross and counts down the seconds they have left to cross.
Municipalities have come together to bring the technology to busy hubs like Commonwealth Avenue in Mount Pearl, Topsail Road in Paradise and Elizabeth Avenue in St. John’s.
The 18 crosswalk locations were chosen as part of the pilot project and will be monitored for one year.
