Some people who use Rawlins Cross are concerned about the reconfiguration, but city council’s lead on transportation says the area is now safer for everyone including pedestrians.
Bishop Field Elementary re-opens in January after being closed for the better part of two years, and parents worry about crosswalk safety. There are 12 crosswalks in the roundabout, but drivers can be preoccupied with negotiating other aspects of the route.
The straight-away has been barred off for about a year-and-a-half and Councillor Sandy Hickman says the circular configuration is preferable to the previous design.
He says some pedestrians may perceive that because of the elimination of the “walk” and “don’t walk” signs that they have lost some independence, but making eye contact with the driver is paramount.
