RCMP say 50 per cent of the 18 fatal accidents that occurred this year involved a vehicle drifting across the centre line into opposing traffic.
The lives of 24 people have been lost in traffic collisions in the province so far this year.
Staff Sergeant David Ossinger, who leads RCMP traffic services in Newfoundland and Labrador says sadly, most collisions can be avoided. To investigators crossing the centre lane often suggests either impaired driving, or distracted driving.
Five of the drivers involved in fatal crashes this year were impaired – four of those five passed away.
Police have long repeated the message that seatbelts save lives. Ossinger says of the 24 lives lost, 13 were not wearing seatbelts.
