The city of Corner Brook has tabled it’s budget for 2020.
Finance Lead Bernd Staeben says the poll tax—which in the past has generated as much as $400- to $450,000—has been eliminated.
Staeben says the tax was simply too difficult to administer. Even when it came to the businesses, it took more effort to administer than the revenue was worth.
There are no other tax increases, due in part to the fact that the city has seen increased commercial activity.
He says 2019 was a “tremendous year” for the city, with a number of new businesses being established—including restaurants and garages—increasing revenue by $800,000.
