The Canadian economy has posted its biggest monthly job loss since the financial crisis, with the unemployment rate climbing to just under six per cent.
Statistics Canada says the economy lost 71,000 jobs in November, compared with a loss of 1,800 jobs in October.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s unemployment rate went up slightly to 11.2 per cent from 11.1 in October. That is by far the highest unemployment rate of any province.
The other three Atlantic Provinces are at about eight per cent and Alberta has climbed to 7.2 percent. All other provinces are under 6.
As for metro regions, the jobless rate in St. John’s dropped by over half a point from 7.3 in October to 6.7 last month. That’s slightly higher than Halifax but much better than Saint John, New Brunswick.
