While food prices are expected to increase by 4 per cent in 2020, the big story in the year ahead will be meat.
The latest Canada Food Price Report, released by Dalhousie and Guelph universities, shows that a number of factors will push up food prices in the coming year.
Lead author Sylvain Charlebois of Dalhousie’s Agri Food analytics lab says Chinese demand for meat, especially pork, is putting pressure on the entire sector. The populous country has been devastated by Swine Fever, and China is buying pork in high volumes from other countries.
He says China is buying pork from Australia, Brazil, Canada, and is also buying beef from all over the world.
