NLESD has issued Notices of Motion related to five school system reviews; Stephenville High School and Picadilly Central High School Systems; Dorset Collegiate School System; Glovertown Academy School System; Phoenix Academy and Gill Memorial Academy School Systems; and Marystown Central High School System.
The possible school closures include:
- St. Thomas Aquinas (K-8)
- Stephenville Elementary (4-5)
- Green Bay South Academy (K-6) and Brian Peckford Primary (K-3) on the condition that an extension to Dorest Collegiate is open
- Charlottetown Primary (K-3)
- Sandstone Academy (K-6), where all students will then attend Phoenix Academy (K-12) as of September 2020
- Pearce Junior High
All are effective June 2020, pending the above conditions and the motion being approved in March.
Chair of the Board of Trustees, Goronwy Price says no decisions have yet been made. The announcement is just give formal notice to the school communities that they are being considered.
They will take into account meetings held with school councils and initial consultations with the school communities before the Board is expected to vote on the changes at its regular public meeting on March 28, 2020.
Price notes that a separate public meeting will held with the school communities prior to the March 28 meeting.
