The first female president of Memorial University will be beginning her role in the spring of 2020 and she is thrilled to be given the opportunity to take her experiences back home to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dr. Vianne Timmons, originally from Labrador City, says she is ready to adapt to the culture of Memorial University and she is ready for the challenges that come with being the president. She says she doesn’t believe there is a university in the country who does not have to deal with financial and fiscal challenges.
Dr. Timmons has served as president since 2008 at the University of Regina and has worked with universities in Atlantic Canada as well. She is an officer of the Order of Canada and was the recipient of this year’s Inspire Award for Education.
According to Timmons, her past work has prepared her for this new role and she is looking forward to making the move to the province and working with Gary Kachanoski until March 31, 2020.
She explains after 11 years at the University of Regina, she is ready for a new challenge. Dr. Timmons says following her “fabulous” opportunity there it is so great to come home and be able to start as the first female president of Memorial University.
