Officials say to move any stockings, decorations, wrapping paper or Christmas trees away from the fireplace in advance, and to use a small amount of dry wood to build your fire and avoid overloading your stove or fireplace.
The department also advises that you maintain fire extinguishers, chimneys and carbon monoxide detectors as well.
They say that following these tips will help keep people safe while enjoying this holiday tradition.
