The town of Trout River on the west coast has declared a state of emergency.
There is currently a blizzard warning in effect in the area, with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h possible.
Pictures from the area show waves washing up over the boardwalk and water pooling on a nearby road.
Mayor Horace Crocker says the state of emergency was put in place for public safety.
Crocker says the railing is gone from most of the boardwalk, and with pooling water and ice it is a very dangerous area. They want everyone to stay away from the boardwalk.
Jenny Parsons owns a restaurant along the boardwalk. She says the clapboard on the back side of the business is taking beating from the waves.
The high winds are supposed to continue tonight and into tomorrow, before dying down in the afternoon.
