Spokesperson Darrel Mercer says only one crossing has happened since Saturday morning and that is creating quite a backlog.
Hundreds of people and trucks are waiting at North Sydney for a break in the weather that will allow the Marine Atlantic ferry system to resume operations.
Mercer says there are 210 trucks and 478 passengers waiting to get to Newfoundland.
Mercer says that traffic is only going to increase as Christmas approaches.
While he understands the frustration, Mercer says there is very little they can do when conditions are this bad. He says the winds at 100 km/h or higher with waves at upwards of eight meters, so they’re at the mercy of mother nature.
