Baffin Fisheries has emerged victorious in its court case against former CEO, Garth Reid.
Supreme Court Justice Vikas Khaladkar ruled that the former CEO unlawfully converted company funds for his personal use.
The company launched the legal action in 2017, after Baffin Fisheries discovered that Reid was diverting company funds to construct a lavish mansion and guest home in Winterton, Trinity Bay.
Baffin Fisheries was awarded just over $544,000 dollars, plus interest and legal costs.
Baffin Fisheries lawyer Philip Buckingham says the Winterton property was paid for “through deception, deceit and conversion of the financial resources of Baffin Fisheries, a not-for-profit corporation.”
Baffin Fisheries says it is an independent, not-for-profit, 100 percent Inuit-owned company held by five hunter and trappers associations in Nunavut, and is the largest commercial fishing enterprise in northern Canada.
