A mother from this province is crediting the generosity of blood donors with helping to save her daughter’s life.
Veronica Vardy had to experience a parent’s worst nightmare in 2018 when her daughter, Amelia, was diagnosed with Leukemia.
She says Amelia became ill during a camping trip during Canada Day weekend.
Vardy couldn’t believe what she was hearing when she got the news. She says the floor began to sink, and she has no idea how she was able to stand after the doctor told them.
Amelia immediately began treatment, which included 11 blood transfusions in the first 10 days. Vardy says receiving blood was critical to her daughter being able to receive treatment.
Amelia is now doing much better and is nearing the end of her treatments, which are scheduled to finish up in September 2020.
Vardy is encouraging everyone to give blood, especially during the holiday season. She says just because we are all busy doesn’t mean the need stops. She says it only takes a few minutes to pop into a clinic and donate.
Appointments can be booked in advance online through www.blood.ca, by calling 1-888-2-donate and by downloading the Give Blood App.
