The province’s Privacy Commissioner is considering whether to launch a formal investigation after it was learned that the health records of thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians were compromised in a recent cyber attack against LifeLabs in Ontario.
The office of the Privacy Commissioner says the information involving some 18,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradors was accessed.
The Privacy Commissioner’s Office has been informed that the information involved was limited to names and MCP numbers and not test results.
The office has been in communication with LifeLabs and is seeking more information to assess the extent to which people in this province may have been affected.
LifeLabs operates primarily in Ontario and BC, however the Privacy Commissioner is trying to determine whether custodians of personal health information in this province have been using LifeLabs in the area and treatment of patients.
Michael Harvey will decide whether to launch a formal investigation after he’s had an opportunity to gather more information and further assess the matter.
