Condolences are pouring in for a 10-year-old boy who died in a tragic Christmas Day accident in Clarenville.
Police say the boy and his father were driving a side-by-side when they went through the ice.
RCMP, local firefighters and EMS responded to the accident. The father tried unsuccessfully to get his son out of the water but the boy became trapped when the vehicle was submerged. He was rushed to hospital once responders were able to remove him from the water. It is estimated he was underwater for an hour.
The boy played with the Clarenville Area Minor Hockey Association. Following a message of condolences to the family in a Facebook post, hundreds of other people from all over the province have responded with messages of their own.
To show support for the family, people have posted pictures of hockey sticks placed outside their front doors.
A spokesperson for the CMHA told VOCM that “It truly is devastating. At times like this, we come together as an extended hockey family to support our young players and families.”
