The province’s justice minister says looking back on 2019 it was a busy year with a lot accomplished.
Andrew Parsons says it’s not until you sit back and reflect that you realize how lucky you are to be apart of some big things, and be apart of a great team.
He attributes his team in Justice and Public Safety for the work done.
They kicked off the year introducing the Eagle Feather in provincial courts, which Parsons says was a huge move that showed reconciliation and the fact that more needs to be done in relation to Indigenous justice.
The Serious Incident Response Team was a big step, along with numerous restorative justice programs.
Parsons says they’ve brought in adult diversion, electronic monitoring, bail supervision and legislation around automobile insurance and opioid addiction, with actions against the manufacturers of the products.
Others big pieces were Clare’s Law, the sexual assault legal advice program and the drug treatment court.
The justice minister says it’s been a good year, and if anything, it sets up what will be a very positive 2020 where they take these initiatives and get to their next goal, which Parsons says is expansion.
