Police and fire crews are investigating after a fire at Hotel Mount Pearl.
All that remains of the structure is one small section at what was once the front of the building. An excavator was parked on the scene this morning.
This was not the first time the hotel caught fire. Saturday’s fire was the third fire there in recent years and the second fire in a few short days.
In the winter of 2014, Hotel Mount Pearl closed due to another fire.
On Christmas night, crews attacked a fire in a storage room that led to smoke and water damage.
The empty hotel caught fire again early Saturday morning, requiring crews to tackle the fire for the entire day. They remained on scene until about 7:30 p.m.
A nearby resident called to reported the fire after he woke up to the smell of smoke and saw flames coming from the roof of the hotel. Fire crews arrived on scene shortly after 5:00 a.m.
Smoke from the fire could be seen and smelled across Mount Pearl and St. John’s making it bothersome for many. Callers to the VOCM newsroom smelled smoke from as far as the St. John’s International Airport.
Park Avenue and surrounding roads that were affected are back to normal today but crews remain on scene to monitor the structure and investigate.
