There are no illusions that the implementation of Clare’s Law will fix all the problems surrounding intimate partner violence in the province, but if it can help just one case, the province’s justice minister says it’s a victory.
Clare’s Law allows those who might be at risk of domestic violence to uncover if their current partner has an abusive past and also allows police to proactively disclose that information to those at risk.
Andrew Parsons says just in the last year we have seen numerous cases where intimate partner violence takes place, and in some cases, people do not realize the prior abusive, or criminal record of their partner.
He says Clare’s Law is hopefully one more step that can help prevent further violence.
Parsons says he doesn’t have any illusions that this is “the be all end all”, but it is a step in the right direction.
The justice minister stated he believes there is still a lot to be done.
Parsons says the issue is not just within justice system; everyone needs to do more to educate younger generations and teach them from the earliest stages that violence is not right, not okay, and they cannot allow it to continue.
He says we need to change.
