A local folklorist says the Mummer’s Play, a tradition that was resurrected in the 1970’s with the Mummer’s Troupe, is “ripe for reinvention.”
The play, which features a host of characters including King George, the Turkish Knight, a doctor, a dragon and hobby horse, used to be performed in homes and public spaces throughout Newfoundland and Labrador over Christmas for years.
The play died out somewhat until Chris Brookes and his Mummer’s Troupe revived the 200-year-old tradition decades ago.
Dale Jarvis of Heritage NL says the play used to be part of the school curriculum, but that has faded again.
The play follows a number of traditional scripts.
One of the best known scripts comes from Change Islands where the local postmaster, a man from England, shared his version of the play with local residents back in the 1800s.
