The Hazel MacIsaac has made her last run to the community of Little Bay Islands, as the province concludes its final services on the island community.
Earlier this year, the full time residents of Little Bay Islands voted unanimously in favour of relocation. The provincial government agreed to provide up to $260,000 to homeowners to help transition them off the island. In doing so, government says they will end up saving money in the long run, as road maintenance and ferry services to the community have been ceased.
Mike Parsons and his wife Georgina have been documenting the final days of the community, culminating with the last ferry leaving the community.
They will continue living on the island, and off the grid, becoming the island’s only year-round residents.
Power was officially cut to the community today around 2:30 p.m.
Earlier Story
As the sun is about to rise on a new year and a new decade, the sun is setting on the community of Little Bay Islands.
“Today is going to be a hard day.” That’s how Mike Parsons began a post to the Facebook blog he and his wife, Georgina, started to document the final days of the community, and their life off the grid once the lights go out and they become the island’s only year-round residents.
Earlier this year the full time residents of Little Bay Islands voted 100 per cent in favour of relocation, with the provincial government agreeing to provide up to $260,000 to homeowners to make the move.
After today road maintenance and ferry service to the community will cease, and the power will be shut off.
In the post, Parsons says his wife will be tossing off the final ferry line as the last of the residents leave the island, ending what has been an eight year long process, but not the community’s legacy.
They will continue to post about Little Bay Islands on their blog, and as they put it keep their home’s lights shining to ensure the community does not become “a footnote in history.”
