The RCMP is urging the public not to venture on to ice-covered bodies of water unless the appropriate safety checks for thickness have taken place, after yet another death due to falling through ice.
A 39-year-old woman from Hopedale is dead after going through sea ice on a snowmobile on New Year’s Eve.
Hopedale RCMP received a report of missing woman from the community who was last seen heading on the sea ice on her snowmobile the day before.
Police and local Ground Search and Rescue responded. The 39-year-old woman’s body was recovered at about 1:30 p.m. on the sea ice about 4.5 kilometers outside of Hopedale. Her snowmobile was partially submerged.
This is the third death involving falling through ice in the last few weeks.
The RCMP says even after checking the ice, people should proceed with caution as many variables including temperature, winds and water currents can impact the safety of the ice surface, as no open body of water covered with ice can ever be considered completely safe.
