Labrador West MHA Jordan Brown says the explanation as to why the affairs office was closed doesn’t make sense.
Government stated the executive director position is no longer required as there is still one in Happy Valley Goose Bay and the economy isn’t in the shape it was when the office opened in 2012.
But Jordan says ore is selling at a lower cost than it was back then.
Jordan states ore was selling at $138 a ton when the offices opened and now it’s selling at $90 a ton so their argument isn’t valid.
Jordan added this is just another example of resources being cut in Labrador.
He says they used to have an executive position for natural resources that was also quietly removed. Labrador no longer has a person on the ground dealing with natural resources and now they don’t have someone on the ground for affairs; it’s just a systematic cutting of resources to Labrador.
Brown says many of the issues these offices deal with are unique to Labrador and there should be directors who can meet them face to face in order to provide real solutions.
