Canada was down 3-1 going into the third period and battled back to grab a lead late in the third among a slew of penalties.
The win marks Canada’s first gold medal since 2018 after finishing a disappointing 6th place finish last year.
Mercer is the first Newfoundlander to suit up for Team Canada and bring home a medal since Luke Adam of St. John’s won a silver medal in 2010.
