People in the eastern half of the island are digging out from a winter wallop from Mother Nature.
The Avalon Peninsula got about 41 cm of fresh, fluffy snow from Sunday afternoon to daybreak today.
Schools and Memorial University are staying closed all day, today’s St. John ‘s City Council meeting has been cancelled, Metrobus and GoBus resume at noon, Confederation Building and other government operations are reopening as is the Avalon Mall. Follow updates on the Storm Watch page.
David Neal, a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says high winds caused significant drifting and visibility issues but they are gradually subsiding.
Bonavista got about 30 cm, Terra Nova 27, and Gander 16.
Neal says there’s another system moving in later in the day on Wednesday.
On the Avalon, it will start off as snow, then likely change to rain before turning back to snow overnight.
Crews Out in Force as St. John’s Tackles Clearing Effort
The City of St. John’s has all equipment in use as they try to clean up from one of the heaviest snowfalls in quite some time.
The first sidewalks to be done will be those in school zones. Mayor Danny Breen says it will be a while before they can remove snow from the downtown.
They first have to open up the rest of the city before trucking snow from Water and Duckworth streets.
