A movement is afoot to have Harry Hibbs added to Canada’s Walk of Fame.
The Bell Island native, famous for popularizing traditional Newfoundland music, passed away in Toronto 30 years ago at the age of 47.
Hibbs left Bell Island for Toronto, establishing himself at the famous Caribou Club, and eventually landed a weekly television show, ‘At The Caribou.’
Hibbs, who recorded 26 albums over his career, is perhaps best remembered for his signature song Black Velvet Band.
His nephew, Jay Tucker launched a Facebook page 12 years ago to have Hibbs immortalized for his contribution to Canadian music.
Over the years, the project got waylaid, but he and his brother resumed the campaign and are looking for support.
In 2008 it was harder to get people involved, but now they’ve decided to revive the effort.
Tucker is hoping people will contact the Canada’s Walk of Fame to nominate Harry Hibbs.
