Team Canada, including Newfoundlander Dawson Mercer, returned to Toronto yesterday with a gold medal around their necks after a remarkable comeback win over Russia on Sunday afternoon.
Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts, who was the 13th forward, was pressed into action early in the tournament and saw action in both the semi-final win over Finland and the gold medal game.
Dawson’s father, Craig Mercer was in the Czech Republic for the tournament, and says it was quite the scene with all the different jerseys being worn by people on the street.
He says there may have been more Canadian fans in the stands than Czech fans, when Canada played the host team.
He says Dawson will do anything to win. Greg says they all knew where he stood with the team when they went to the Czech Republic, and that he was perfectly comfortable with that.
