An interim report on the environmental impact of the mass salmon die-off off the province’s south coast last summer has been released.
MAMKA, a Mi’kmaq environmental organization was asked by Northern Harvest to conduct environmental monitoring of ten aquaculture sites and surrounding areas affected by the die-off of 2.6 million salmon in September.
55 km of shoreline was assessed by MAMKA, showing an impact to approximately 1.6 km , or 2.87 per cent.
Impacted areas showed signs of debris and fat. A number of other areas have yet to be monitored, after weather forced the suspension of monitoring operations. That will resume when weather permits, including revisiting affected sites to measure the amount of dispersion.
All assessment details will be included in the final report. Read the interim here.
