Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says evidence suggests that an Iranian missile was behind the destruction of a Ukrainian International Airlines flight near Tehran on Tuesday night.
The flight was headed from the Iran capital to Kyiv, Ukraine when all contact was lost. All 176 people on board were killed, including 57 Canadian citizens.
Trudeau addressed media this afternoon, saying intelligence from multiple sources indicates that an Iranian surface-to-air missile struck the plane shortly after takeoff.
However, he states that the strike may have been unintentional, or accidental. As such, the Prime Minister insisted that a complete and thorough investigation is needed to complete the picture of what happened.
The incident happened just hours after Iran fired a ballistic missile attack at Iraqi bases, which housed US troops, amid tensions triggered by the US slaying an Iranian general via drone strike.
