The act of storytelling is something that local folklorist, Dale Jarvis, has down path but at Heritage NL’s monthly Memory Mug-Up event, the tables turn.
At the Marjorie Mews Library, Jarvis only asks the questions and the stories come from participants.
January’s mug-up theme was winter memories. From sliding to skating to the amounts of snow, participants remembered many details about their times growing up in St. John’s.
One participant, who is now in her sixties, says when she was in her early teens her parents allowed her to walk to Bally Haly with her friends to go Tobogganing. She says it is still a good place to go today.
Dale Jarvis asked her who her sledding companions were and she responded with “the neighborhood kids.”
The memory mug-up also went into details about what kids would wear outdoors in the snow back then. Jarvis asked about jackets and footwear.
Another participant described ‘gaiters,’ which were what people wore over their shoes to keep them dry.
Next month’s Memory Mug-Up will be an inter-generational session.
