MacKay served as a federal MP from 1997 until 2015, holding several portfolios during that time including Minister of National Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He did not run in the 2015 election which saw the defeat of the party by the Liberals.
MacKay’s name has been rumored for years as a potential candidate for leadership of the party, but has stuck to private life since leaving politics.
No other details about MacKay’s campaign have been announced at this time.
